Xylenes

Global suppliers of mixed xylenes

Shell chemicals companies are global manufacturers and suppliers of xylenes, though only supply mixed xylenes, not the individual isomers. One of our key strengths is access to feedstocks within the Shell Group.

How are xylenes used?

Most mixed xylenes go into isomer production, particularly para-xylene, which is used in both polyester fibres and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resins. Ortho-xylene is used in plasticisers, medicines and dyes. Some mixed xylenes are used as solvents. They are also desirable gasoline components, but are blended less often than toluene because their value is usually higher in chemical applications.

Did you know?
Para-xylene is a feedstock for terephthalic acid which is, in turn, used to make polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a versatile polymer used in the manufacture of food and drink packaging, textiles and even x-ray film.
