Operating from a position of strength in the styrene monomer market
Shell companies have over 40 years' experience in producing and supplying styrene monomer around the globe. Today, the Shell Group is the second largest producer of styrene monomer in the world and has a strong global manufacturing base. Operating co-product SM/PO plants as well as conventional styrene monomer plants, we are recognised as technology leaders in this area and as suppliers of product of high and consistent quality.
What is styrene monomer?
Styrene monomer is an aromatic hydrocarbon which, under normal conditions, is a clear, colourless, flammable liquid. It can be produced by the alkylation of benzene with ethylene, or via the 'SMPO' process, which co-produces styrene monomer and propylene oxide via the oxidation of propylene by ethylbenzene hydroperoxide.

How is styrene monomer used?
The derivatives of styrene monomer are styrene-based polymers. They are used in the manufacture of plastics and rubber products, including polystyrene, expandable polystyrene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, styrene-acrylonitrile, styrene butadiene rubber, unsaturated polyester resins, and styrene butadiene latices.
