Propylene glycols

Propylene glycols - our global promise

Our journey with propylene glycols (PG) has taken us to Asia. With the addition of PG capacity in Singapore and as part of the CSPCL complex in China, Shell chemicals companies have grown to become a recognised player in PG.

Through a truly global network of tanks and distributors, we make sure that a range of propylene glycols  is always close to our customers and their markets. Through actively participating in industry bodies and promoting and raising awareness of standards and regulations, we also ensure that these products are delivered safely and responsibly.

What are propylene glycols?

Propylene glycols is the collective name for monopropylene glycol (MPG), dipropylene glycol (DPG) and tripropylene glycol (TPG).

Propylene gloycols are derivatives of propylene oxide (PO), produced in a two-step process. The first step is the reaction of PO with water into a mixture of MPG and DPG and the second step is the distillation and purification of the mixture into its two separate components.

How are these products used?

Monopropylene glycol:
ever dreamt of sailing away on a boat on a warm summer's day or taking off for a distant holiday destination on a cold winter's night? You could be doing both with the help of propylene glycols.

MPG's most important end use is in the production of unsaturated polyester resins that, in turn, go into items that effect our daily lives, like water tanks, orour leisure time, like sailing boats. Other end use application areas are paints and coatings; airplane de-icers/anti-icers; antifreeze and industrial coolants; detergents; hydraulic fluids; and cosmetics.

Shell chemicals companies also supply United States Pharmacopia (USP) grade propylene glycol.

Dipropylene glycol: The end uses of DPG include unsaturated polyester resins, plasticisers, alkyd resins, cosmetics and urethane polyols.
