Phenol

Phenol is manufactured by Shell Chemical LP at the world's largest integrated cumene/phenol production facility at Deer Park, Texas, USA. Having a facility that is fully integrated from raw materials to end products at one site gives Shell Chemical LP a significant advantage in operating as a low cost producer of phenol.

Support activities for phenol include a well-developed product stewardship programme that includes customer advice on the safe handling of phenol and participation in industry-sponsored activities.

Phenol plays an unseen, but major role, in our everyday lives. Plywood, windows, compact discs, computers, sports equipment, and car headlights are some of the many items that rely on this important raw material.

Compact discs are made from a 1.2mm thick disc of polycarbonate, typically coated with a much thinner layer of super purity aluminium. The information on a CD is laid down as a spiral track of grooves, moulded into the polycarbonate.
