Ethylene oxide

A leading position in ethylene oxide

Shell chemicals companies are the second largest global producers of ethylene oxide, with world class manufacturing facilities in Europe (Moerdjik), the US (Geismar), and Asia Pacific (joint venture in Singapore). Our other strengths include a leading position in ethylene oxide/glycol technology and licensing and an industry leadership position in product stewardship, gained through working with customers to promote the safe handling of ethylene oxide and environmentally sound practices.

How is ethylene oxide used?
Products derived from ethylene oxide have many different uses. These include antifreeze for engines, production of polyethylene terephthalate (polyester fibers, film and bottles), polyesters, plasticisers, humectants, cosmetics, ointments, pharmaceutical preparations and brake fluids.
