Isopropyl ether (IPE)
Isopropyl ether (IPE) is a colourless liquid with a characteristic ether-like odour and is virtually insoluble in water. It is miscible with most organic solvents in all proportions and forms azeotropic mixtures, but with water it is only miscible when isopropyl alcohol is added. IPE has a good solvent power for animal and vegetable oils, mineral oils, fat, wax, nitrocellulose, natural resins and ester gums. Like other ethers, IPE can form explosive peroxides and must be stored and handled carefully. Although the commercial product generally contains small quantities of an inhibitor, the product supplied should be tested for any peroxide content. Shell reserves the right to restrict sales of IPE to locations that have demonstrated the ability to handle safely.
