Energy efficiency performance
The 2005 Energy Index* was 95.8% compared to the target of 94.5%, which represents a deterioration from our 2004 performance. The energy index is proportional to capacity utilisation, requiring nearly as much energy to run an asset at 90% utilisation as at 60%. In 2005, the energy index was impacted by demand losses in addition to being significantly influenced by weather related disturbances (hurricanes in the US Gulf Coast) and utility failures experienced in the third quarter.
*The Energy Index measures the energy consumed per tonne of production, comparing current performance with that of the 2000 base line year which, by definition, is 100%.

SD goal: by 2007, improve overall energy efficiency by 7.5%, relative to 2002.
How are we improving our energy efficiency?
Actions that are already underway at a number of locations to improve energy efficiency fall into three broad areas:
- Implementation of the EnergiseTM programme at major sites. The programme, which is run by Shell Global Solutions, comprises an audit of energy use at a site and the implementation of a range of recommended energy saving projects. Sites currently involved in the programme are Moerdijk, Berre, Stanlow, Deer Park, Geismar and Norco. Other sites: Scotford, Yabucoa, Mobile and Seraya will develop their Energise programmes in late 2006-2007.
- Improving energy efficiency as part of other upgrades of facilities, infrastructure and asset integrity (particularly in the US).
- Delivery of energy efficiency gains through continual improvements in the operational reliability of production units.
