Our commitment
“Shell chemicals companies are committed to pursuing the goal of no harm to people.”
Hazard data for High Production Volume (HPV) chemicals
The Shell chemicals companies made a commitment to produce a basic set of environmental and health effects data (a Screening Information Data Set or ‘SIDS’) for all of the 107 HPV chemicals they produce, and to make the data publicly available. This entailed evaluating the adequacy of existing data and, where necessary, carrying out new testing to supplement available information.
A commitment was also made to both the ICCA and US EPA HPV voluntary initiatives to provide this basic hazard data. To avoid duplication of effort and minimise animal testing, all HPV work is coordinated through industry consortia in which representatives of Shell Chemicals participate.
By the end of 2004, that initial commitment was met in full. Meeting the 2004 target was an important interim step to achieving the 2007 goal of completing initial risk assessments for all HPV chemicals. In 2005, work got underway to assess the effort required to meet that next target and to put the required actions in place.

SD goal: by 2004, ensure that a basic set of hazard data is compiled for all HPV chemicals produced and marketed by Shell chemicals companies, as an interim step to completing initial risk assessments by 2007.
