To translate this high level commitment into specific actions, and encourage each of the business groups and all employees to integrate SD into their everyday activities, a set of strategic priorities was defined in 2001 and a series of five year SD goals set in 2002.

SD is being integrated into day-to-day work activities in other ways:
-
an SD challenge is made in every capital investment review;
-
the ‘cost of carbon’ is reflected in the base economics of all investment proposals;
-
life-cycle and sustainability tools are used in strategic decision-making;
-
social performance plans, social performance reviews and community engagement processes have been implemented at all major operating sites.
The task ahead
We’ve made a positive start in fulfilling our commitment to contribute to SD. But we also realise there are many more people we have to listen to, much more we have to understand, and a lot more work to be done.
What we already know is that the successful implementation of SD will underpin our long-term business success. We will be in a position to make better informed decisions about our future direction, will become a more trusted business partner, and will be able to play our part in making an essential industry better understood and accepted.
We don't have all of the answers. But we have established targets for ourselves and are firmly committed to a strategy that combines financial success with a positive contribution to the well being of the planet and its people, both now and in the future.
