How is 1-butene used?

1-butene is a high purity chemical intermediate used in the manufacture of a variety of other chemical products. 1-butene is used in the manufacture of polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene, butylene oxide and the C4 solvents secondary butyl alcohol (SBA) and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).

1-butene fills an important role in the production of materials such as linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). The co-polymerisation of ethylene and 1-butene produces a form of polyethylene that is more flexible and more resilient. 1-butene can also help to create a more versatile range of polypropylene resins.
