Acetone

Shell Chemical LP has fully integrated production facilities at Deer Park, Texas for the manufacture of cumene and its conversion into phenol and acetone. In addition, a facility for the production of Acetone HP (high purity) is available in Europe, with the resultant product sold into the European market. Our logistics system is capable of meeting customer needs in different regions, supplying consistent product in either barge, rail or tank truck quantities.

Acetone, also sometimes known as 2-propanone or dimethyl ketone (DMK), is widely used as a chemical intermediate in the production of other chemicals such as acrylic plastics and bisphenol A, the precursor of polycarbonate and epoxy resins. When used by itself, it is a valuable solvent used in applications such as coatings, adhesives, personal care, extraction and pharmaceuticals.

Did you know?
Acetone occurs naturally in plants, trees, volcanic gases and forest fires. Low levels of acetone also occur naturally in our bodies, the result of the breakdown of body fat.
